"This young man approaches Ragtime with the vitality, strength, enthusiasm, gusto, and spirit that it deserves. His playing is nothing short of remarkable, exhausting, and utterly astonishing."

I am very excited to announce that my debut solo CD, Tricky Fingers, is available for purchase from a growing number of venues. Recorded on a beautiful 1974 Steinway "D" at the First Unitarian Church in Pittsburgh, "Tricky Fingers" contains 18-tracks of music featuring some of the very best pieces from the early 20th-century.
Featuring classic ragtime, novelty, and stride, Tricky Fingers showcases the music of Eubie Blake, Scott Joplin, Billy Mayerl, and George Gershwin, as well as contemporary rags by Robin Frost and others. It also includes two new compositions by me: the award-winning "Red Elephant Rag" and the lovely "Theresa Novelette."
Reviews:
"Spitznagel's skill is never in question on this disc. His fortes are powerful, his pianissimos whisper and he doesn’t hesitate to juxtapose the two. His interpretations are anything but stereotypical – one hardly knows what to expect next!" -Jack Rummel, Ragtime Reviews [click here for the full review]
"Refreshing, irresistible performances. A very talented young man in composition as well. Love the album."-Nancy Fierro, pianist [website]
"Martin Spitznagel is a truly extraordinary and amazing pianist. The only disappointment about a Spitznagel recording is that you can't SEE him playing. That in itself is also an amazing experience to behold. All of his humor, love, and genuinely kind personality come through in his playing. That's why it's such a joy to hear him make music." -Richard Dowling, pianist [website]
